Lattice Theory, Probability, and Relevance

چکیده

In this tutorial, I will introduce probability theory from the perspective of lattice theory where the fundamental notion is based on a partial ordering of logical statements ordered by implication. This construction forms a Boolean lattice, which is related to the fact that the corresponding logical operations form a Boolean algebra. I generalize the concept of logical implication to degrees of implication by generalizing the Zeta function of the lattice. The rules of probability theory come out naturally as a set of constraint equations. Through this construction we are able to neatly link order to structure to algebra to calculus. The meaning of probability is inherited from the meaning of the ordering relation, implication, rather than being imposed in an ad hoc manner at the start. Last, I will briefly introduce a definition of questions introduced by Cox, and show how the lattice of questions under the natural ordering is dual to the lattice of assertions—not by an isomorphic symmetry, but rather by a symmetry known as Birkhoff’s Representation Theorem. The result is not a Boolean algebra, as Cox, Belnap and others erroneously believed, but instead a far-richer algebra that presents some interesting challenges for those interested in deriving measures, such as relevance, on that space.

Magnetic Properties in a Spin-1 Random Transverse Ising Model on Square Lattice

In this paper we investigate the effect of a random transverse field, distributed according to a trimodal distribution, on the phase diagram and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional lattice (square with z=4),  ferromagnetic Ising system consisting of magnetic atoms with spin-1. This study is done using the effectivefield theory (EFT) with correlations method. The equations are derived using...

What is a Question?

A given question can be defined in terms of the set of statements or assertions that answer it. Application of logical inference to these sets of assertions allows one to derive the logic of inquiry among questions. There are interesting symmetries between the logics of inference and inquiry; where probability describes the degree to which a premise implies an assertion, there exists an analogo...

Stochastic Split Determinant Algorithms

I propose a large class of stochastic Markov processes associated with probability distributions analogous to that of lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions. The construction incorporates the idea of approximate spectral split of the determinant through local loop action, and the idea of treating the infrared part of the split through explicit diagonalizations. I suggest that exact algori...

Toward Question-Asking Machines: The Logic of Questions and the Inquiry Calculus

For over a century, the study of logic has focused on the algebra of logical statements. This work, first performed by George Boole, has led to the development of modern computers, and was shown by Richard T. Cox to be the foundation of Bayesian inference. Meanwhile the logic of questions has been much neglected. For our computing machines to be truly intelligent, they need to be able to ask re...

Nontrivial Fixed Point in the 4 D Φ 4 Lattice Model with Internal O ( N ) Symmetry

It is shown that the infinite dimensional critical surface of general euclidean lattice actions in a generic fourdimensional scalar field theory with Φ interactions has a domain of special multicritical points where higher dimensional operators play a special role. Renormalized trajectories of higher derivative continuum field theories with nontrivial interactions are traced back to special ult...
